What are Implants?

Are you missing a permanent tooth? Do you have gaps in your smile? Do you wear dentures and experience some of the following problems:

  • Slipping and clicking while talking?
  • Irritation and pain when you chew?
  • Fear of eating in public?
  • Feeling or looking older than your age?
  • Desire to improve chewing ability
You may be a candidate for dental implants, an alternative to missing  teeth. Dental Implants have been used successfully for many years. The implant itself is a post that is surgically placed in the jaw. A prosthesis (artificial tooth or teeth) is then attached to the post
What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
  • Dental implants are the most advanced tooth replacement system ever devised.
  • Dental implants never develop decay.
  • Dental implants never require root canals.
  • Dental implants preserve the jawbone, which can prevent premature aging.
  • Dental implants are considered the closest replacement that can match your lost natural  teeth.

What is the alternative?
If you are missing  one or two neighboring teeth the option to have  a fixed restoration is to make what is called a fixed bridge. This involves grinding your neighboring natural teeth in order to support this bridge. This procedure may weaken your natural teeth in addition bridges usually require replacement after 7-8 years of service, however sometimes the bridge is the only alternative to replace a missing tooth if you are not a candidate for dental implants or if finances are a primary concern.

When multiple or all teeth are missing then a removable denture is used to replace the missing teeth.

How are dental implants placed in my mouth?
Most cases are done in the dental office under local anesthesia and sedation if required. The procedure of replacing your teeth with dental implants involves two steps:
The first step involves making a small opening in your gums and a space is prepared in your bone using special drills to receive the implant.

The implant is put in place and the gums closed over it for a period of 8-12 weeks to allow for healing of bone around the implant.

After this healing period the implant is uncovered (step 2) and a small post is attached to it. On-top of this post the appropriate prosthesis is attached whether it’s a single crown or an overdenture.
